Sound Baths are healing musical experiences played with Himalayan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, tuning forks, drumming, drone instruments and chanting. Participants lay on the floor or sit in a chair and let the waves of sound wash over them. The sound bath closes with vocal toning and exploration of our voice. A sound bath will typically begin with lying down or sitting up in a comfortable position. Eye pillows are often used to help you feel calm and heighten your other senses, especially hearing. Most of the instruments are played from one place and occasionally they are brought around the room and sometimes played over or on your body. Part meditation, part listening exercise, sound baths offer a way to access deeper states of consciousness. Everyone's experience is unique to themselves. Sometimes participants feel elated, stirred, relaxed, peaceful or joyous. We are all vibration and the sound bath allows us to cleanse in the sound of healing frequencies. The sound bath closes with toning and joining together in vocal harmony or meditative movement or deep silence. Come and enjoy and tune into your natural resonance.
Group sound baths will be led by Surya Leigh Mellor and assisted by Marie-Eve Perreault and/or Simon. We work to create a safe space and provide props for your comfort during the sound experience.
Please register through the contact page. Thank-you!
Sound Therapy Training and Experience
eSince 2012 I have been working with vibrational healing and sound therapy. I was first introduced to sound healing through mantra in 2000 and then did training in 2013 with kirtan artist and musician, Brenda McMorrow through Deva Tree Yoga, and have been offering community kirtan since 2015. I have found kirtan to be a nourishing and healing practice and the call and response nature of kirtan singing expanded into an interest in working with sound therapeutically. I then did Singing Bowl Therapy and training with Lisa Wilvert. This training focused on planetary frequencies and the use of different frequencies as a way of accessing a deeper awareness. I find the singing bowls provide a way of calming the nervous system allowing one to regulate emotions and manage anxiety and depressive symptoms. From here, I started working with various sound therapy teachers around the world to learn about different instruments and their healing properties as a way of aiding relaxation and attuning to mindfulness. I have attended many workshops and participated in several full trainings. The healing properties of sound has impacted me profoundly personally and within community. Sound has provided an anchor within ritual, a way of joyfully coming together in communal spaces and a still point for spiritual practice. My sound journey began with the simplicity of voice and call and response singing and has grown into layerings of sound. It has been a way for me to access centering and grounding. I now work with people individually and in groups. In providing group sound baths, I am grateful to my dear friend and kirtan lead, Marie-Eve Perreault, and my husband, Simon for joining me in creating expansive sound scapes. Resonance
"Singing bowls bring one to a deep inner place and their overtones resonate with one's entire being." Surya did her training with Lisa Wilvert, whom trained various protocols and Singing Bowl treatments in Nepal. Lisa Wilvert trained with Master Sound Healers, Shri Krishna Shahi and Santa Ratna Shakya, both third generation singing bowl healers and teachers in Nepal, as well as Master Satya Brat, from Kolkata, India. The bowls are handcrafted and are tuned to a certain frequency. Each frequency has a different impact on the human being and in a sense it is like 'tuning our own instrument". We are all perfect, whole and complete. The bowls are merely a means of tuning into our own perfection and opening pathways to our own optimum health and well being. I work with planetary bowls and I'm influenced by the work of Hans Cousto and Rudolf Steiner in aligning planetary frequencies and healing frequencies. The bowl work never ceases to amaze me and truly is transformative on a deeply cellular level. In terms of meditation, it is a way for me to access a deep stillness within that is so precious in a busy world. One can come very quickly to centre when working with the bowls. Their vibratory sound, effects many layers of the body and has a lasting impact. The Singing Bowls are an incredible access point for balancing and nourishing the mind and body.
Attunement
"The precision of the tuning forks allows for focus and direct healing." The pure tones of the unweighted tuning forks allow for them to be used in interval work. One is able to work with certain frequencies in a very accurate manner. The benefits of working with different frequencies and intervals are amazing and have profound healing affects. Working with entrainment and aligning the hemispheres of the brain and the nervous system all are instrumental in the transformative process of sound healing. By reducing the brain-wave activity one can come into deep relaxation which creates possibility for healing and transformation. There is someing so clear and pure about working with the tuning forks that is different than some of the other instruments. The tuning forks are also amazing for clearing and balancing the chakras. The weighted tuning forks work with a localized vibration that send sound waves throughout the body. It is wonderful to witness people smile or sigh or relax their facial/body gesture with the weighted forks. It is a sound massage that penetrated deeply and is extremely powerful.
Rhythm
"The sound of the drum brings one to the present moment." The heart beat of our mother carries such a strong link with the creation of life. Rhythms created with the drum can remind one of being in the mother’s womb on a deep cellular level. This can evoke feelings of peace, serenity and security. In the womb one is connected with divinity and spiritual realms while the physical body is forming. Trust and full support are present in this state. Different rhythm patterns can act as a vehicle to connect with the pulse of life while transporting one to altered states and connection with spiritual dimensions. The drum is an incredible healing tool that allows us to feel the rhythm of life itself. The steel tongue drum offers another way of working with rhythm.
Clarity
"The expression 'crystal clear' is perfect when thinking of the healing properties of the Crystal Singing Bowls." They are an effective tool for clearing space and also clearing blockages within, allowing energy to flow within the chakras, aura and physical body. Using the crystal frequencies can bring help to clear disturbances in one's mental and emotional flow, helping one to re-align and balance the body, mind, heart and soul. Quartz crystal singing bowls can bring us back into our natural state of balance. The most abundant component of the physical body is connective tissue which is a liquid crystalline material. This connective tissue forms a continuously interconnected system throughout the body. These crystalline structures in our physical body resonate effectively with the sounds emitted by the crystal singing bowls. These bowls re-align those parts of us that are imbalanced with the use of sound combined with crystal. This creates a vibration that will amplify and transform the healing energies, which are stored within the bowl, and work directly with the crystalline structure of the body as well as alter brain wave frequencies, allowing us to enter into the alpha-theta optimum healing frequency and also creating a balance and synchronisation in the two hemispheres of the brain. Depth of Sound
"The Gong is one of the most powerful sound healing tools." It was used in Ancient Chinese temples and is part of the tradition of Kundalini Yoga. The Gong creates rich harmonics that are complex and profound. Without any discernible melodic qualities to hold on to, the mind surrenders to the intense vibrations of the sound. This allows the body to relax and release into a deep state of healing. The parasympathetic nervous system is engaged and a deep energetic clearing can occur. Surya uses a 36" Symphonic Gong and smaller Wind Gongs to create an array of sounds for Gong Bath and individual sound work. The gong is penetrating, other worldly in its sound. It has a depth that fills both inner and outer space.
Sweet Song
"The voice is our own divine instrument." It accompanies us on our path of life and allows us to access the deepest places of healing. Toning, singing, humming and self expression of voice are all areas in which one can clear and move layers of old patterns and stuck residue. Working with mantra and intentional sound has been one of the most transformative experiences in my life. Through mantra the possibility of manifestation, healing and joy are possible and probable. It has been a great honour to sing with Sing true!
